We had a good turnout for our Fall tournament again this year. In addition to the 38 participants, we had a distinguished guest.........none other than Table Tennis legend, Bill Guilfoil.

Independence - Fall Non-Sanctioned Mini-Tournament - October 23, 2010

The Independence Parks & Recreation and JACOMO Table Tennis clubs have scheduled their Fall tournament for Saturday, October 23, 2010. This is a non-sanctioned mini-tournament.


As in past tournaments, a Giant Round-Robin will start the play with players moving on to single elimination groups based on their position within the Round-Robin. Doubles will be either single elimination or Guaranteed Two Match Play depending on how many teams are entered and when Singles finish. Please support table tennis in the KC area by participating in this low-key, fun-filled event. Detailed information follows:


Event Date: Saturday, October 23, 2010

Event Time: Singles - 10:00 am. Warm-up/Registration starts at 9:00 am. Doubles at the conclusion of Singles, but not before 2:00 pm. The tournament should be wrapped up by 5:00 pm.


Location: The Truman Memorial Building Auditorium, 416 West Maple, Independence, MO


Equipment/Facility: 8 Stiga tables on a basketball court


Cost: Singles - $10 per person, Doubles - $3 per person (Payable at check-in. Cash preferred. No Credit/Debit cards)


Registration Deadline: Thursday, October 21, 2010


Who Can Play?: Everyone is invited


Lunch: There is no scheduled break for lunch, so bring your own food or join in a group order with food being delivered to the tournament site.

Please provide your home phone number, e-mail address, and USATT rating if you have one and the events you want to play in. If you have a partner for doubles, let me know. If you don't have a partner, we can fix you up with someone the morning of the tournament. The City of Independence is not taking registrations or collecting money for this tournament.


Participation must be limited to the first 40 people who register. Register early to ensure yourself a spot. Please pass this posting on to any fellow players who might be interested in playing.

Independence Tournament Results - April 17, 2010

Saturday was a great day for Table Tennis!

We had 36 players from all parts of the KC Metro area join us in Independence for our Annual Spring Tournament. Of the 36, 10 were "first timers" at our tournament. As a matter of fact, there were several who had never played in a tournament before. Pretty exciting stuff.

All the players started in a Giant Round Robin with the top two finishers from each table moving to the Championship Single Elimination Bracket and the remaining players going to the Consolation Bracket.

Everyone has their own way of staying relaxed while competing.

The first Semi-final match in the Championship Bracket was between Ilya Rozenblat and Dinu Varghese.

Louie Loyd (on right), our Club President, awards the winners of the Consolation Bracket. First place goes to Wei Wang, second to Ram Koya, and third to Amirali (Roger) Farishta.

The winners in the Championship Bracket were Dinu Varghese in first place, Lin Rahardja in second, and Ilya Rozenblat in third.

Following the Singles competition, the Doubles gets underway. We had 12 teams competing......that is a record number.

And the 1st place winners were Lin Rahardja and Ilya Rozenblat.

Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to all the players who helped make the tournament a success. I believe that everyone had lots of fun playing people that they would not ordinarily have a chance to compete against.

I also think that many of the players took advantage of the opportunity to learn how to improve their games. I saw one of our players who recently switched to a hard bat getting advice from Jeff Johnston. Jeff is the current U. S. Champion in the Over 40 Hard Bat so he certainly qualifies as an expert. That is just one example of the good stuff that happens at this tournament beyond just competing.

The good news is that we will do this again in the Fall...........October 23rd to be exact. If you are a long term planner, mark your calendar. Thanks again to all the players.....we hope to see you again in October if not before then.
